leiden university excellence scholarship – (LexS) 2023-2024


All Master’s Degree courses in the MA, MSc, and LL.M programs are eligible for scholarships under the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Program (LExS). Each academic year’s September and February sessions will be eligible for the grants.

Leading research university Leiden University is situated in the Dutch city of Leiden. It has a reputation for excellence in research and education and is home to a diverse community of students and researchers from all over the world. These grants are intended to assist students in paying for their tuition, housing, and living expenses while attending Leiden University. The amount of scholarships awarded varies depending on departmental funding. Before receiving a Leiden Excellence Scholarship, recipients are required to abide by the rules and regulations related to the scholarship and indicate in writing that they agree with them.

The amount and kind of scholarships awarded rely on the funding made available to each faculty department. One of Europe’s top universities for international research, Leiden University was established in 1575.

The university’s motto is “Praesidium Libertatis,” which translates to “Bastion of Freedom.” In locations in Leiden and The Hague, it has seven faculties for the social sciences, the arts, and the sciences. 28,130 students and about 6,700 employees attend the university.

A select group of exceptionally gifted and driven students who exhibit strong academic abilities and the potential to significantly advance their chosen fields of study are given the scholarship. In addition to paying the full tuition for the master’s program of choice, it also comes with a monthly allowance for living expenses.

  • € 15,000 of the tuition fee
  • € 10,000 of the tuition fee
  • Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee

To be eligible for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship, Candidates must fulfill the following criteria

  • Required Language: English
  • Being a non-EU/EEA student disqualifies you from receiving the Dutch study grant
  • Have graduated with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Possess a solid academic record with a GPA of at least 3.5 or an equivalent Satisfy the prerequisites for admission to the chosen master’s program at Leiden University
  • Be motivated and have a study plan in place before beginning your master’s program at Leiden University.
  • After completion of the project, the student must submit a project report within three months, with accompanying images.
  • A student is allowed to submit several applications for scholarships at one time. However, it is not possible to combine scholarships that are provided or sponsored by Leiden University. This concerns the following scholarship programs: Orange Tulip – China and CEU Praesidium Libertatis. Also, it is not possible to combine the LExS with scholarships that are provided on a bilateral agreement with educational institutions, or any other scholarship which might be provided or sponsored by Leiden University in the near future
  • The student must comply with Dutch visa regulations.
  • The LExS will not be awarded to students who are admitted to a second Master’s program at Leiden University with the exception of students applying for a Master’s program for which a specified previous Master’s program or work experience is mandatory.
  • Leiden University should be notified as soon as possible of any change in nationality, type of residence permit, and/or possible “Studiefinanciering” support, throughout the academic year.
  • If the student terminates the study prematurely, any requests for reimbursement of tuition fees will be made to Leiden University. The student should submit the de-registration form to Leiden University. If applicable, the student will subsequently receive a reimbursement of the tuition fee less the
    scholarship on a pro-rata basis

Leiden University excellence scholarship application process:

The program’s application procedure is listed below

  • Completely fill out the application form after downloading.
  • Submit the complete application dossier to the address provided.
  • The committee will evaluate the applications, on the basis of criteria.
  • The applicants will be notified one month before the deadline that either their application was successful or not, or whether they will receive the scholarship or not.
  • Applicants are responsible for completing the application along with documents, in case of incomplete or late application, Minerva or Leiden University will not be responsible.
